Adult Education at First United Methodist Church

The Adult Education team at FUMC is committed to offering a variety of educational opportunities for life long learning. Our educational opportunities vary from traditional Bible Studies examining the Gospels to community studies to address difficult topics such as our interfaith study on Religion and War. Our 2008-09 calendar will offer:

 1)      Faith Forum series- offers discussions on a variety of topics concerning faith, current events and social justice. Sessions will be announced in the weekly Bulletin and will be held from 10:30 to 11:45 am on Sundays in the FUMC Library. The sessions are usually one time meetings but occasionally are in 2 parts.

 2)   Sunday morning Bible Study series- offers both traditional study of the scripture and more contemporary studies such as “Religion and Politics: The Role of Church in the Public Arena,” which was offered this past spring. We are planning to offer one session this year in the spring after Easter. This will be a 4-5 part series held from 10:30 to 11:30 on Sundays (location to be announced).

 3)      Winter Sunday Night Community Study- this will be our 4th year to offer a studyfor our St. Cloud Community. Our previous studies have included: “An Introduction to Islam”, “Christian Identity and Diversity” and “Faces of War: An Interface Perspective of Religion and War”. The year’s topic is yet to be decided but we are planning a 4-5 part series to be held Sunday nights (6:30-8:30 pm) at our New Horizon site Sartell beginning 1/25/09.

 4)      Book Reading and Meet the Author- we will be selecting a book to read during the late spring or summer of a religious scholar studying at St. John’s Ecumenical Institute or teaching at the House of Prayer and arrange an evening of discussion with the author. This past summer (2008) we read the Wisdom Way of Knowing by Cynthia Bourgeault. This activity is also planned as a 4-5 part series this summer (2009); The book we will be studying is Cynthia's book The Wisdom Jesus  and the last session will involve meeting the author.

Our Adult Education team includes: Paula Tompkins, Joanne John, Val and Phil Rogosheske, Randy Johnson, Bill Meier and Angie Ausban.
